IIEA Views EPA E-15 Ruling for 2007 and Newer Vehicles as "Good Start" but Cites Abundant Data Demonstrating Alcohol Fuel is Safe and Clean in Older Vehicles

SANTA CRUZ, CA - October 13, 2010: The International Institute for Ecological Agriculture (IIEA) welcomes the long-overdue Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ruling in favor of the increased use of alcohol fuel blends. The EPA's decision today allows states to mandate an increase in the maximum alcohol fuel blend from 10 to 15% (E-15) nationwide for cars 2007 and newer. The decision is based on the emission reducing benefits of using alcohol fuel as a gas additive.

"The EPA ruling increasing the blend limits on alcohol fuel from 10% to 15% is a good initial step toward transforming our nation's dependence on toxic, expensive and finite fossil fuel usage," said David Blume, Executive Director of IIEA, biofuels expert and author of the Amazon.com critically acclaimed book, Alcohol Can Be A Gas!. "There is a wealth of data supporting the use of E-15 and blends up to E-98 in older as well as new vehicles. Our own tests demonstrate a clear and steady improvement in emission reductions as we increase the amount of alcohol fuel we add to gas. Alcohol fuel has tremendous potentials for reversing the climate change impacts of gas emissions and will ultimately help us prevent disasters such as the recent Deepwater Horizon Gulf cataclysm. We hope that the EPA will step up to its mission of mandating for clean air protection approving E-15 and higher blends for all fuel injected vehicles as soon as is possible."

Blume and IIEA tour the globe promoting the benefits of alcohol fuel and will be in Eugene, OR October 25; Pt. Arena, CA Oct. 28; and Atlanta, GA Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, where it and Project Gaia are hosting a seminar for International business leaders looking at ways to leverage localized appropriate-scale alcohol fuel production to help solve pressing health, environmental, and economic issues by:

• Stopping global deforestation related to wood-fired cooking and heating

• Creating literally millions of new localized 'Green' job opportunities

• Providing abundant, sustainable and locally grown food supplies

• Using a wide range of renewable resources to produce clean fuel for far less than gasoline

• Dramatically reducing the costs of home heat, cooking and transportation

• Enabling fuel injected vehicles everywhere to run on sustainable alcohol fuel

According to the IIEA, aside from the immediate environmental benefits of reducing hydrocarbon and other notable airborne particulates, increasing the market demand for alcohol fuel consumption will enable states to keep millions of fuel dollars in their local economies. Additionally, encouraging localized alcohol fuel and related co-product production would stimulate the creation of tens of thousands of direct and indirect non-exportable alcohol fuel related jobs.

"America has the ability to lead the global movement to truly renewable energy independence and to stop the use of toxic and finite fossil fuels and the consequences of its related pollution," Blume continued. "By producing and increasing the market opportunities for alcohol fuel, the U.S. would have true homeland security in the form of abundant food, fuel, energy and jobs available now and well into our future."
