Golf BlueMotion - Redefining the benchmark for fuel economy and affordability in the small car segment

BOTANY, AUSTRALIA – November 1, 2010: Volkswagen is pleased to introduce a new super efficient model - Golf BlueMotion – to the award winning Golf family. This model represents the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class and is the best known German automotive environmental label available. The name BlueMotion not only refers to the model, its fuel economy and emissions, but comprehensively to the whole brand: Blue is the corporate colour of Volkswagen and stands for the elements to be protected such as water and air; Motion embodies the aspect of forward, future-directed mobility with the goal to protect the earth’s resources for future generations.

The Golf BlueMotion is equipped with an exceedingly innovative high-tech package yet is affordable for all drivers. This package includes an efficient common rail TDI engine, diverse high-tech components such as an energy recovery system based on energy recuperation, Stop-Start system, and improved aerodynamics as well as low rolling resistance tyres. All these technologies have one aim: to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible.

On the safety side the Golf BlueMotion will share the same safety features which are fitted to all Golf models. These include standard ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program), Hill Start Assist, a highly effective network of seven airbags including front side and side curtain airbags (head airbag system for front and rear passengers) and a knee airbag; belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator and head restraints that counteract the risk of whiplash injury (both front seats); along with three rear head restraints with three point seatbelts for all passengers.

The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is also setting new aesthetic standards with its special design of interior and exterior features as well as the logo on the radiator grille and rear which differentiates the Golf BlueMotion from the rest of the Golf range.

While delivering a combined fuel consumption figure which is better than the Toyota Prius, the Golf BlueMotion does not compromise on driving experience or affordability. In essence, the Golf BlueMotion truly demonstrates what is technically feasible when the best available yet affordable technologies of our times are combined to deliver a remarkable fuel consumption figure of 3.8-litre per 100km.

The most fuel-efficient production Golf of all times is powered by a quiet and powerful common rail turbo-diesel and like all TDIs, this engine does not lack in power or torque by any measure. In fact, the opposite is true: The 77kW TDI engine develops its maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1,500rpm to 2,500 rpm. With a theoretical range of over 1,500 kilometres (55 litre tank) the Golf BlueMotion will keep you on the road for longer while producing minimal CO2 emissions - as low 99 g/km.

The BlueMotion technologies aboard the Golf BlueMotion make up a comprehensive package of extremely diverse high-tech components and efficiency solutions. Building the foundation for the extremely low fuel consumption and emissions values of the Golf BlueMotion is 1.6-litre TDI with four cylinders with modified engine management software and reduced idling speed. A gear-shift indicator integrated in the instrument cluster shows the most energy-efficient gear for the current driving conditions. Other BlueMotion features include recovery of braking energy (regenerative braking), a Stop-Start system, low rolling resistance tyres, especially lightweight and aerodynamic wheels styled according to the specific version, lowered suspension as well as sporty design modifications and a customised interior.

Full specifications and pricing of the Golf BlueMotion will be released at launch in 2011.
