THOMPSON, PAYNE SCORE IN TOPEKA

            TOPEKA, Kan. (August 29, 2010) - James Thompson and Jay Payne each took home the trophy in their respective classes for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 5 Heartland Championship at Heartland Park Topeka.
            Thompson, Vernon, Texas, ran 5.40's (elapsed time in seconds) throughout eliminations in taking the win in Top Alcohol Dragster against No. 1 qualifier Monroe Guest, Mannford, Okla., in the final round.  Thompson ran 5.423 seconds at 272.34 mph to Guest's 5.503, 259.71.  Thompson took out No. 2 qualifier Randy Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., in round one and Cody Perkins, Bluffdale, Utah, in the semis.
            What was looking to be a monumental match up in Top Alcohol Funny Car final between veteran racers Jay Payne and Vern Moats, ended quickly when Moats, Des Moines, Iowa, crossed the centerline as was disqualified giving Payne the win in.  Payne, Claremont, Calif., ran low elapsed time in both round one and in the semi's in defeating, Wayne Butler, Forest City, Ill., and Robert Kanenwisher, Conifer, Colo.
            Five home state racers made their way into the winner's circle with wins led by Comp Eliminator racer Will Hatcher, Satanta, Kan., who out ran Chris McGaha of Odessa, Texas.  In Super Stock it was Steve Brack, Bonner Springs, Kan., winning over Todd Patterson, Augusta, Kan.; Jimmy Holzman, Wichita, Kan., won in Stock in his '08 Cobra Jet; McPherson, Kan., resident Phil Unruh won in Top Dragster; and Gray Stinnett added a win to his resume in Super Comp.
            Other winners at Heartland Park were Allen Firestone, Velma, Okla., in the Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman class running 7.133 seconds, 167.61 mph against Jerry Holt; Terry Sullivan, Richardson, Texas, in Super Gas; Mark Hackett, Quincy, Ill., in Super Street; and Mike McCullah, Houston, in the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson class.
            West Central Division racers head to Tri-State Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Sept., 10-12.
