Anderson Scraps His Way to the Brainerd Semifinals

Event: 29th annual Lucas Oil Nationals
Location: Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, MN
Day/Date: Sunday, August 15, 2010

The best indicator of any racing team’s mettle is how they perform when not at their best, with Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team’s showing at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, MN providing a perfect example. Throughout the two days of qualifying, Anderson and his KB Racing crew had worked tirelessly to find the proper tune-up for their race car, settling in the ninth position for Sunday’s final eliminations.

Their hard work started to pay dividends in the first round, when Anderson used the fourth-quickest pass of the opening stanza at 6.625-seconds to edge his brother-in-law Ronnie Humphrey. Although the two-time Brainerd winner was able to easily trailer a tire-shaking Roger Brogdon in the second round, he knew he would need to substantially improve upon his 6.637-second time in order to successfully defend his win from a year ago.

The final obstacle between Anderson and his 92nd career final round was rival Jeg Coughlin. As expected, he put forth a game effort, covering the quarter-mile in 6.643-seconds with a top speed of 207.24 mph. Unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome his opponent’s 6.609-second pass. Despite the premature ending to his day, the Duluth native was relatively pleased to have advanced as far as he did on what turned out to be a less-than-optimal weekend, while plotting his course for a return to his winning ways.

“We’re certainly never pleased unless we win, but this Summit Racing team got about as much as we could today,?? said Anderson. “For some reason, we never had a horse this weekend. We had a total of six swings at it, but never really got if figured out. I also feel bad that we didn’t run better in front of our family and friends. We certainly tried to do well and make them proud, but just couldn’t put the round pegs in the round holes. It certainly wasn’t for lack of effort, as we worked on both Jason’s (teammate Line) and my cars all weekend, but we were just off our game from the start.

“We have two weeks before the real racing begins with the playoffs and have a lot of work to do before then. We’re going to spend a lot of time on the racetrack and the dyno before Indy, and are not going to rest until we get this all figured out so we can contend for the championship??
