NOTTING HILL, AUSTRALIA – March 1, 2010: Mazda Motorsport’s two-pronged turbo attack on this year’s Targa Tasmania will be putting power to the ground with help of one of the world’s best racing tyres from Yokohoma.

The Mazda RX-8 SP of Steve Glenney and the New Generation Mazda3 MPS of Brendan Reeves will be sticking to the tarmac at the gruelling Tasmanian rally from April 27-May 2 thanks to Yokohama’s 18 inch ADVAN A050 semi-slick tyres. In addition the Mazda RX-8 SP will sport light weight ADVAN Racing RG2 wheels.

Specially designed for racing, the Advan tyre and wheel combination brings Mazda’s Targa 2010 team one step closer to being race ready.

And with tyre preservation being one of the most important factors in a rally like Targa, Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley is pleased to have Yokohama along for the ride.

“The Yokohamas maintained their performance for a longer period than other tyres we tested,” said Horsley, the architect behind Mazda’s four consecutive 12 Hour Endurance race wins in the RX-7 SP.

“While there are many intricacies that make up a good race car, tyres are undoubtedly one of the most important elements to get right, especially in a rally as tough as Targa Tasmania. In most cases, not having the right tyres can be a game changer.

“As a manufacturer we don’t invest in major motor sport campaigns such as Targa Tasmania unless we know we have a good chance of finishing up the pointy end.

“Having secured the Yokohama product and the depth of knowledge that comes with it, is a huge step in the right direction.”

The 2010 Targa Tasmania, the world’s toughest tarmac rally, will be held from April 27-May 2. The 2000km event is made up of around 40 special closed road stages and regularly attracts more than 300 entries.
