EPSOM, UNITED KINGDOM – February 5, 2010: Toyota GB has announced further details of its accelerator pedal safety recall programme in the UK.

Following yesterday’s confirmation of the Toyota vehicles affected by the recall in the UK, the DVLA is in the process of providing contact details of owners and registered keepers of these vehicles. The DVLA has made this a top priority and is providing Toyota with the required data in two days.

Using this information, Toyota will immediately be contacting the owners/keepers to inform them that their vehicle is among those covered by the recall. The letter will explain the issue and the signs drivers should look out for that might indicate their car has a problem. It will also provide details of what to do in the very rare event of problem arising, and where to find further advice and assistance.

Miguel Fonseca, Managing Director Toyota GB, said: “We are committed to accomplishing this safety recall as quickly as possible, it is our aim to do so within a matter of eight weeks, in spite of the large number of vehicles involved.

“The DVLA has helped us greatly in moving things forward. We are in discussion with our network of Toyota service centres to explore options for carrying out the recall work as quickly as possible, and with the least inconvenience to our customers. This will include prioritisation of recall work, weekend working and extended opening hours.”

The parts required for the recall are being air-freighted from Japan and will arrive in the UK on Wednesday next week, by which time Toyota technicians will have received specific training in the work that needs to be done – a job that should take no more than 30 minutes to complete.

Distribution of the parts will be carefully co-ordinated across the UK to accommodate the needs of the 206 Toyota-approved service centres that will carry out the recall work.

A second letter will be subsequently sent to all owners/keepers inviting them to contact their chosen Toyota service centre to book a date and time for their car to be attended to.
