LUTON, UNITED KINGDOM – May 11, 2009: Trainee vehicle mechanics in Bedfordshire have been given the chance to hone their engineering skills on the 2009 Car of the Year thanks to Vauxhall.

The Luton- based company has donated a pre-production Insignia – which would otherwise have had to be destroyed - to Dunstable College. The vehicle will be specifically used to train young people on the advanced levels of motor engineering.

Derek Pearce at the Kingsland Campus, Houghton Regis said, “The students will be able to carry out complex checks that are not possible on the older vehicles they are currently using. We are also running a higher course in September as our students have progressed considerably, and they will now be able to gain City & Guilds Level 2. Receiving the Insignia is very exciting for us.”

The Vauxhall Insignia was voted Car of the Year 2009. It was designed, engineered and built to be one of the safest cars on the road. It has been awarded a five-star adult occupant rating and also four-stars for child protection. These are the best ratings given for the large family car segment. The car has already proven a runaway sales success for Vauxhall, with over 13,000 sold in the UK since the model’s introduction in January.

Danielle Chapman, Manager Community & Government Relations said “Here at GM UK we not only strive to produce good vehicles but also to support our local communities where possible. In a few years time the young people studying at Dunstable College will be seeking employment. By allowing individuals to have such an updated vehicle to work with will keep them abreast with the latest technology.”
