inthinc Technology Used in Landmark IIHS Study on Teen Driving Safety

SALT LAKE CITY--inthinc, a developer and manufacturer of technologies to improve driving safety, today announced its teen monitoring and mentoring driving system, known as tiwi™, was the technology utilized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its independent driving safety study released today. The IIHS report entitled “In-vehicle Monitoring and the Driving Behavior of Teenagers” concludes that “equipping the cars teens drive with in-vehicle monitoring devices can help reduce [driving] risks by giving feedback about driving behavior to both teenagers and their parents.”

One of the more significant findings of the study is that instances of excessive speeding were significantly reduced when each of three requirements was met:

  1. Real-time alerts sounded in the vehicle following aggressive or unsafe behavior
  2. Speed-related report cards were emailed to parents to create accountability
  3. Teenage drivers were given a grace period to cancel report card notifications by slowing down

tiwi is the first onboard computer with the power to instantly alert and instruct young drivers while, at the same time, enabling parents to receive real-time notifications by phone, text or email concerning their teen’s current location, actions and driving safety.

“It is an honor for inthinc to be selected by the IIHS as the technology provider for such an important study,” said Todd Follmer, CEO of inthinc. “The findings of this independent study from a leading authority on highway safety validate how important the right technology is in changing teen driving behavior and, ultimately, saving lives. tiwi is the only technology on the market that meets all three of the criteria outlined in the IIHS report.”

The tiwi teen driving system will be available from inthinc next month. The tiwi utilizes proven technology that has been used in light commercial fleets and heavy industrial trucks to reduce accidents by more than 80 percent. The device or data gathered by devices has also been used by some of the world’s most safety-conscious organizations, including NASCAR and NASA.
