LOS ANGELES--OriginOil, Inc. the developer of a breakthrough technology to transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum, was featured at the Algae Fuels Forum of the World Biofuels Markets 2009 conference in Brussels on March 16, 2009.

As a featured presenter in the conference segment, “Algae as the Ultimate Biomass Source,” OriginOil CEO Riggs Eckelberry showed that current business models would not replace fossil fuels until 2060 – much too late to address climate change and petroleum depletion issues. Eckelberry advocated a new model under which technology innovators could export their breakthroughs to producers all over the world, instead of trying to roll out production on their own.

“We know that algae is likely to become the world’s biofuel of choice, which means that no one producer group is going to dominate,” said Eckelberry. “It’s better to help everyone make algae by sharing technology rapidly and not trying to compete with them as a producer.”

In his presentation, Eckelberry stressed the importance of avoiding applications that require infrastructure, distribution networks, transportation or heavy capital. Instead, he suggested that initial algae markets should target existing industries, such as natural gas-fired furnaces, biodiesel refining factories, ethanol production plants, waste-to-energy operations, and wastewater treatment facilities.

Eckelberry continued, “Rather than developing large-scale facilities that produce algae oil in-house, OriginOil will license its technology for use anywhere in the world. By scaling and sharing the algae oil production process, OriginOil is helping to accelerate the pace of adoption of renewable energy in the world.”

About OriginOil, Inc.

OriginOil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world's oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce "new oil" from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products, such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents, without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil-producing feedstock, such as corn and sugarcane, often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies.
