You might blink twice before pulling into Shell Gas Station on South Congress Avenue: Gas is only $2.07 a gallon.

The station, just south of Mary Street, has consistently kept prices lower than most of the city in an attempt to entice customers to buy products inside and compete with the 7-Eleven next door, said Abdul Memon, a Shell shift manager.

Prices dropped to $2.07 Wednesday night, and cars have been lining up back to back in the station’s lot since opening at 6 a.m. Thursday morning. At each of the six gas pumps there was a car jutting out into the street between 10 and 11 a.m. The average price for the Austin market is $2.60 per gallon.

But the customers didn’t mind.

Robert Deas was in his pajamas when he got a call from a friend of the low prices. He said he got right up and drove over to the Shell station.

“I only had to wait 10 minutes,” said Deas, who drives a truck. “It was the first time I filled up my tank in at least six months.”
