CENTREVILLE, Va., Aug. 26, 2008 -- Reports of major flooding in the U.S. have taken center stage over the past several months. Flooded cars from Florida, the Midwest and other storm-ravaged areas will be resold, putting millions of consumers purchasing a used car over the next few months at risk. Flood damage information is reported to Carfax from all 50 state DMVs and, as a service to consumers everywhere, is available for free at www.carfax.com/flood.

Consumers continue to unknowingly buy flooded cars, raising concerns over the number of waterlogged wrecks likely to be resold from this year's storms. A simple and important first step when shopping for a used car is to check to flood damage reported to Carfax, followed by a mechanic or body shop inspection.

Carfax communications director Larry Gamache is available for interview to discuss the dangers of flooded vehicles and offer tips for avoiding the purchase of unsafe vehicles.
