FEV Shows Spray Guided Turbocharged Engine at 2008 SAE World Congress

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 10 -- FEV announced today that it will be showing its Spray Guided Turbocharged (SGT) engine at the 2008 SAE World Congress, April 14 - 17 at Cobo Center in Detroit. The technology promises to offer diesel-like fuel economy in a gasoline engine, along with reduced emissions and increased horsepower. The engine builds upon technology shown at last year's World Congress. The announcement was made by Gary Rogers, FEV, Inc. president and CEO.

"The FEV Group continues to strive to develop powertrain alternatives designed to reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil and that promote conservation of our natural resources," said Rogers. "The SGT engine is not only a demonstration of that continuing commitment, but a technology that is within reach in the near term."

The 1.8L I4 SGT engine allows a fuel economy improvement of approximately 8 percent in the vehicle drive cycle using lean burn operating conditions compared to stoichiometric turbocharged gasoline DI engines and produces 160kW (89 kW/L) of power and 320Nm of torque while creating one of the industries best-in-class engines for fuel consumption. With the ability to support homogeneous and lean burn concepts, the BMEP levels in FEV's spray guided turbo approach diesel levels.

The attractive fuel consumption enables the SGT to produce significant environmental benefits in terms of reduced CO2 emissions. The SGT emits 130 g CO2/km in a mid-size vehicle over the New European Driving Cycle without the use of alternative fuels. Reduced hydrocarbon and particulate emissions are also benefits derived from the SGT. The system is ideal for hybridization, which could provide an additional 10 percent reduction in fuel consumption, and is directly adaptable for Flex-fuel operation.

  Other benefits include:
   - Reduced knocking through adapted charge motion
   - Cold start optimal
   - Enhanced spray penetration
   - Reduced oil dilution
   - Support of lean combustion concepts
   - Reduced charge motion variability
   - Flex-fuel capable
   - SULEV capable

The SGT engine is one of several practical or conceptual technologies that FEV will display at the World Congress.
