China's Top Ten Automakers for 2007 Unveiled: GM #1

General Motors has maintained a leading position as the top selling automaker in the Chinese market for the full year of 2007, according to a report released by National Association of Passenger Manufacturers yesterday.

In 2007, Shanghai GM sold 500,308 vehicles, leading car sales in Chinese market for three consecutive years. Shanghai GM also is the first passenger vehicle company in China to sell over half a million vehicles a year. Shanghai GM sold 160,500 units Chevrolet vehicles in 2007, up 56.4 percent from one year earlier; in the same year, the automaker sold 332,000 Buick vehicles, an increase of 27,800 units from one year earlier; the company also sold 7,040 Cadillac and 618 Saab vehicles.

FAW VW sold 459,359 vehicles in 2007, of which Jetta alone accounts for 43.49 percent of the total volume. Despite the rising sales, Jetta and Audi were also the main contributors to FAW-VW¡¯s profit gains.

Shanghai VW comes as the third biggest seller in Chinese market, which sold 436,343 vehicles in 2007. Four models, including Passat, Santana, Santana 3000, Polo represent 91.07 percent of its total sales.

Chery Automobile, the fourth biggest seller, sold 381.000 vehicles, about 1,100 units short of its annual target. Of the 381,000 vehicles it sold, 119,800 were exported.

The fastest growing automaker in Chinese market was Changan Ford Mazda, which saw sales climbed 60 percent to 217,100 units in 2007, far ahead of industry average.
