The Search Continues for Lighter, Cleaner, More Efficient Batteries for the Automotive Industry

DUBLIN, Ireland--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45115) has announced the addition of Global Market Review of Automotive Batteries Forecasts to 2012 to their offering.

Batteries may not have changed much in appearance over the last 40 years, but technological advances have been made to ensure they keep up with modern demands. Although lead batteries will continue to start cars for many years, the search continues for lighter, cleaner, more efficient replacements.

The power required by electrical components and systems in cars has steadily increased over the last decade, due to the growing number of electrical safety and convenience systems being fitted. So, whilst heating and air-conditioning, on-board communication systems and heated seats can make cars safer, more economical and comfortable, they also increase consumption of electrical energy.

We have discovered that future vehicle electrical systems may feature two batteries: a starter battery and a general purpose battery. According to Bosch, the "high power for starting" and "general purpose electrical supply" functions will be separated. This will make it possible to avoid the voltage drop during the starting process, while ensuring reliable cold starts, even when the charge level of the general purpose battery is low.

Use this report to gain a better understanding of the real issues facing the automotive OE and aftermarket battery market, the challenges to supply, and how manufacturers are responding.

It considers:

  • The main market and technical drivers of change in the OE and retrofit battery markets.
  • Changes/trends in selling batteries through the established distribution channels.
  • Impacts of increases in lead, prospects for alternative battery chemistries, etc.
