JOHNSON, MASSEY TOP QUALIFIERS IN HOUSTON

HOUSTON - Qualifying is complete and the field is set for final eliminations at the 19th Annual Sportsman Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Houston Raceway Park. Top Alcohol Dragster Pilot, Spencer Massey and Top Alcohol Funny Car Driver Jonathan Johnson, qualified on top and will go into eliminations in the No. 1 position. This is the sixth of seven races in the West Central Division.

Massey of Fort Worth, Texas, had another great day of qualifying clinching the No. 1 position over Dave Heitzman of Grand Rapids, Ohio. Massey ran a pass of 5.421 seconds at 266.79 mph while, Heitzman ran 5.484 seconds at 257.92 mph.

Johnson of Beaumont, Texas, outran the field to remain in the top spot going into final eliminations. Johnson ran a pass of 5.737 seconds at 247.97 mph. Jay Payne from Claremont, Calif., qualified in the second position with a run of 5.745 seconds at 253.90 mph.

In Comp Eliminator, Tom Schmidt of Lindstrom, Minn., took his '34 Chevrolet for a run of 8.593 seconds taking the first position. Craig Bourgeois of Metarie, La., took the second position with a pass of 6.916 seconds.

Kent LaPorte of New Iberia, La., in his '91 Camaro ran 11.780 seconds to take the first spot in Stock Eliminator, while Ronnie West of Broussard, La., took the second spot.

Super Stock racer, Irvin Johns of Charlestown, Ind., qualified first with a run of 9.649 seconds and Randall Klein of Lincoln, Neb., qualified second in a '56 Nomad.

In other categories, Top Sportsman driver Ronnie Davis from Commerce, Ga., qualified on top with a pass of 6.641 seconds at 212.66 mph. Davis outran Earl Folse of Raceland, La., who qualified second. In Top Dragster, Mike Manners of Willis, Texas, ran a 6.596 second pass at 206.48 mph to clinch the top qualifying position. In the Motorcycle category, Eddie Glaze of Houston, remained on top driving a '90 Suzuki. Eric Crook, also from Houston, took the second qualifying position.
