AAA Road Service Calls Increase During Hot Weather; Tips for Motorists to Help Avoid Summer Breakdowns

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 2, 2006 -- AAA Michigan has had an almost 20 increase in calls from motorists, compared to a week earlier for emergency road service assistance. Since Friday (July 28) record-high temperatures continue across the state and more than 16,000 motorists have needed assistance, up from some 13,000 during the same period the prior week. Calls for help include vehicles that wouldn't start and needed a tow, tire changes and battery failure.

As the thermometer remains in high digits, AAA reminds motorists that special precautions are needed to ensure safe driving. Extended periods of heat can cause battery failure, tire blowouts, belts and hoses to deteriorate and other mechanical problems that may leave motorists stranded.

AAA advises motorists to be prepared. If you have not had your vehicle inspected by a certified technician during the last six months, doing so can prevent a costly breakdown. Check tires for wear. Check oil levels.

Motorists should also have a small cooler of bottled water on hand and keep a blanket or umbrella available for shade in an emergency situation. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
