Prepare Your Vehicle for Spring During National Car Care Month

BETHESDA, MD - April 1, 2006: There is no better time than National Car Care Month in April for motorists to become more car care aware about the very real economic, safety and environmental benefits of performing regular vehicle maintenance, according to the Car Care Council.

During National Car Care Month, many repair facilities and automotive- parts stores join businesses, civic groups, local radio stations and others to sponsor free vehicle inspections and safety checks. The events, referred to as Vehicle Check Ups, are held in parking lots at shopping malls, schools, businesses and other highly visible locations.

The inspections include volunteers checking fluid levels, tires, lights and other system components. After the inspection is completed, volunteers review any discrepancies with the motorist and provide information about proper vehicle maintenance and repair. The goal of check events is to help motorists learn how to "Be Car Care Aware."

"Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, National Car Care Month is the perfect time to focus on your vehicle's maintenance needs to make sure it is ready for the upcoming spring and summer travel season," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council.

The Car Care Council recommends the following maintenance tips for spring:

* Check all fluids. There are several fluids, in addition to the antifreeze, that require attention, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission fluids and windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. For maximum engine life, change the oil and filter every three months or 3,000 miles or as directed in your owner's manual. Use specified oil grade and weight.

* Check hoses and belts. A belt that fails can affect the electrical system, air conditioning and power steering, as well as the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorated from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.

* Check the tires. Check tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, indicating the need for wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

* Check the brakes. Now is a good time to check the entire system, including brake linings, rotors and drums.

* Change the wiper blades. Replace every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.
