Olivarez and Payne hit the jackpot at The Strip


LAS VEGAS - In the final eliminations from the Short Line Express Market
Las Vegas Gamblers Shootout, a round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Aaron Olivarez and Top Alcohol Funny
Car driver Jay Payne scored wins in their respective classes. 

Olivarez, of Sandy, Utah, earned his second Pacific Division win of the
year when he took out Joe Windham in the Top Alcohol Dragster final. En
route to his final round victory, Olivarez used a series of 5.3-second
runs to defeat California runners Sean O'Bannon of Alta Loma in Round 1
and Hillary Will Scotia in the semifinals, before then taking out
Windham in the final. In his final round victory over Windham, Olivarez
laid down a 5.308-second pass at 264.86 mph, his quickest pass of the
weekend, to earn the win.  

In his final round contest, Payne, of Claremont, Calif., defeated No. 2
qualifier Steve Gasparrelli to earn his third Lucas Oil Series win of
the year. Before facing Gasparrelli in the final, Payne took out John
Weaver in Round 1 and Von Smith in the semifinal round. In the final,
Payne recorded a 5.761 second pass at 252.80 mph, to Gasparrelli's pass
of 5.783 seconds at 254.28 mph, to take the win.

Other winners at this weekend's event were defending Lucas Oil Series
National Champion, Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz., in Comp Eliminator;
Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., in Super Stock; Fred Henson of
Madisonville, Texas, in Stock Eliminator; Mitch Mustard of Arvada,
Colo., in Super Comp; Greg Ventura of Garden Grove, Calif., in Super Gas
and Brian Griffey of Glendale, Ariz., in Super Street. The winners in
the Pacific Division's Top Comp and Super Eliminator Series', which were
run in conjunction with this weekend's event, were Todd Hoerner of Deer
Park, Wash., in Top Comp and John Freer of Sacramento, Calif., in Super
Eliminator.
