Olivarez takes over the lead in Dragster at The Strip, while Payne
remains on top in Funny Car


LAS VEGAS - In the final rounds of qualifying at the Short Line Express
Market Las Vegas Gamblers Shootout, a round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series, being held this weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Aaron Olivarez captured the top
spot, while yesterday's Top Alcohol Funny Car leader, Jay Payne,
remained on top of his field. 

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Sandy, Utah's, Olivarez laid down a 5.317
second pass at 267.22 mph to claim the top in the class. Yesterday's
leader, Joe Windham, recorded a run of 5.350-seconds at 266.85 mph to
take second. Sliding into third is Joey Severance, who will face off
with Boulder City's, Duane Shields in the opening round tomorrow at
noon. Unable to make cut for the eight car field were Las Vegas runners,
Frank Dischbein and Darby Neagle, who wound up in the No. 17 and 18
spots respectively. 

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, yesterday's leaders, Payne of Claremont,
Calif., and Steve Gasparrelli remained in the No 1 and 2 spots. Payne
improved on his time from Friday and laid down a pass of 5.680-seconds
at 253.85 to solidify his No. 1 position, while Gasparrelli remained
qualified with his 5.687 second pass at 255.24 from Friday. Qualified
closely behind Gasparrelli is Larry Minor, who recorded a 5.693 pass at
251.81 mph to claim third. Among those who were unable to make the cut
at this weekend's event was multi-time Northwest Division Champion,
Bucky Austin of Fife, Wash., as well as Las Vegas resident Paul Crifasi,
who recorded a best of 6.175 seconds at 226.66 mph this weekend.

In other qualifying action this weekend at The Strip, Bo Butner III of
Floyds Knobs, Ind., is the leader in Comp Eliminator, while in the
Pacific Division's Top Comp Series, which is running in conjunction with
this weekends event, Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C., leads his field.  

Sunday's racing action at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will
feature final eliminations in all categories beginning at 7 a.m. Top
Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled begin final
eliminations at noon.

Spectator gates Sunday at 7 a.m. General Admission tickets each day are
$25 for Adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old. Children under 5 are
admitted free. Senior citizens, Military and students are all eligible
for $15 admission each day with proper I.D.

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is located on Speedway Blvd., exit
