NHRA Action Kicks Off at Atco Raceway

	ATCO, N.J. - In the first rounds of qualifying at Atco Raceway
for the Franklin Trailers NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Top
Alcohol Dragster driver Art Gallant and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot
David Ray took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes. 
Gallant, of Boxboro, Mass., covered the quarter mile in 5.452 seconds at
256.60 mph to lead the field. The Northeast Division point's leader is
followed by John Finke in second at 5.477 seconds, 261.47 mph, along
with three New Jersey racers rounding out the eight-car field. Richard
Bourke of Old Tappen, N.J., is fourth while Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon,
N.J., and Bruce Horner of Bergenfiled, N.J., are seventh and eighth
respectively.
Ray, of Plaistow, N.H., drove his '01 Avenger to a 5.839 second lap at
247.16 mph pass and is followed by Frank Manzo and Bob Newberry who are
locked in a point's battle for both the NHRA Lucas Oil National
Championship and the NHRA Northeast Division Championship. 
Manzo, of Morganville, N.J., is qualified second with a 5.905 second,
246.08 mph run. The reigning division champion currently trails Newberry
in both the national and divisional point's standings. Newberry sits
third after the first round of qualifying running 5.922 seconds, at
246.26 mph.
Allyn Armstrong is No. 1 in Comp Eliminator with a 9.021 second pass,
0.629 seconds under the index and is followed by Joe Carnasciale of
Crasnston, R.I., in second at 8.714 seconds, 0.595 under. 
Super Stock racers Scott Grove and Brian Oakes of Williamstown, N.J.,
qualified one and two with runs of 8.227 seconds and 9.284 seconds. 
Victor Guilmino III joined in on the fun in Stock Eliminator qualifying
on top with his '68 Barracuda. Guilmino ran 10.729 seconds, 1.271
seconds under with Bill Hawk in second in his '67 Shelby at 10.294
seconds, 1.256 seconds under.
	Racing continues Saturday at 9:30.  Gates open at 7 a.m.
