Fast Driving is Single Mom's Recipe for Surviving a Wrecked Marriage

BOCA RATON, Fla., Sept. 26 -- A single mom who supports her five children as an executive pastry chef wants TransMedia Group to spread her recipe for surviving a wrecked marriage -- drive very fast!

Shortly after her divorce, Mary Katharine, 39, spun out of her depression and did something she always wanted to do -- drive a race car over 140 miles per hour with a pack of male drivers eating her dust.

Mary Katharine currently races a Spec Miata in SCCA in the Southeast division. She travels on the weekends to Daytona Beach and Sebring, Florida, as well as other cities with her five daughters who watch her while sitting in the stands, cheering on their fearless mom as she zooms by.

Her drive is to seek sponsorship to boost her horsepower into the next division where she will be the only female to race a Subaru in the pro series, Speed World Challenge Touring.

"Early on it was pretty bumpy," she said. "In fact, I got bumped from behind by a frustrated male race car driver who didn't appreciate having me in front of him. After a lot of bumping and scraping we both fell victim to a third racer that caused a huge wreck. As a result of that experience, we became friends and he's over the gender thing and now we're just fierce competitors," she proudly explained.

"Mary Katharine has an uplifting message for all women who have gone through a difficult and deflating divorce," said Tom Madden, TransMedia Group's chairman and founder. "It liberated her to do something she always dreamed about," said Madden, who has represented successful race car drivers and helped them to secure sponsors.

"The fact that she's a superb pastry chef is icing on the publicity cake," he added.
