State, National Traffic Safety Leaders to Convene in Norfolk

Conference to Focus on Reducing Traffic Fatalities and Injuries

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles will host the annual GHSA meeting at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott from August 29-31.

Four hundred top highway safety and public health officials from across the country will be in attendance. General session speakers for the event include:

   Dr. Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University
    of Virginia
   William Leighty, Governor Mark Warner's Chief of Staff
   Virginia Secretary of Public Safety John Marshall
   Jayne O'Donnell, auto safety reporter with USA TODAY
   Real Admiral Richard Brooks, Commander, Naval Safety Center

The Conference, themed Navigating the Crash Course, will focus on the best way to reduce highway injuries and fatalities Workshops will address a multitude of traditional and emerging highway safety issue. Sessions include:

   * Distracted Driving Laws: What are the Impacts?
   * Reducing the Military's Biggest Threat: Roadway Crashes
   * What Do We Do About Pocket Bikes, Personal Conveyances and other Non-
     Traditional Vehicles?
   * New Ideas for Reducing Speed
   * Fatigue and Driver Safety: Latest Developments
   * What's It Going to Take to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities?
