NASCAR Newest Minority Owned Cup Series Team Announces Drivers
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, June 27, 2005 – Victory Motorsports, owned by Terance Mathis, former All-Pro Wide Receiver for the Atlanta Falcons, yesterday unveiled the names of, Morty Buckles, an accomplished driver that will represent Victory Motorsports in the ARCA Racing Remax Series, and Carl Long, a skillful and experienced driver that will represent Victory Motorsports in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, and drive car #94. Morty Buckles, an African-American driver, has been a part of the NASCAR world for a number of years, most recently in the Drive for Diversity Program, and the NASCAR/Dodge Weekly Series, winning races and respect all around the organization. Morty Buckles, a native of Decatur, Georgia, started racing go-carts at the age of 8, with his father and grandfather by his side. Buckles received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Polytechnic State University, located in Marietta, Georgia. Buckles has been a part of the NASCAR family since the early 1990’s, and has raced on some of NASCAR’s Super Speedways, including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Talladega Super Speedway, and Chicagoland Speedway. “These days’ racers have to be the entire package. The knowledge about the car, the knowledge of the tracks, and the solid support team, which is what I bring to Victory Motorsports, and what they bring to me,�?? explains Buckles. Carl Long, a resident of Troutman, North Carolina, has a solid 22 years of racing under his belt. Raised in Roxboro, North Carolina, Long started racing in the early 80’s, and won his first Track Championship at South Boston Speedway in 1987. In 1992, Long was named the Winston Racing Rookie of the Year at Orange County Speedway. In 2000, Long made his first Winston Cup race, and in 2004 made a career high of six Nextel Cup races. Carl Long has participated at several levels of NASCAR racing, including Nextel Cup Series, Busch Series, and the Craftsman Truck Series.
