NASCAR Newest Minority Owned Cup Series Team Announces Drivers

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, June 27, 2005 – Victory Motorsports, owned by Terance
Mathis, former All-Pro Wide Receiver for the Atlanta Falcons, yesterday unveiled
the names of, Morty Buckles, an accomplished driver that will represent
Victory Motorsports in the ARCA Racing Remax Series, and Carl Long, a skillful
and experienced driver that will represent Victory Motorsports in the NASCAR
Nextel Cup Series, and drive car #94.
Morty Buckles, an African-American driver, has been a part of the NASCAR
world for a number of years, most recently in the Drive for Diversity Program,
and the NASCAR/Dodge Weekly Series, winning races and respect all around the
organization. Morty Buckles, a native of Decatur, Georgia, started racing
go-carts at the age of 8, with his father and grandfather by his side. Buckles
received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Polytechnic
State University, located in Marietta, Georgia. Buckles has been a part of the
NASCAR family since the early 1990’s, and has raced on some of NASCAR’s
Super Speedways, including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Daytona International
Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Talladega Super Speedway, and Chicagoland
Speedway.
“These days’ racers have to be the entire package. The knowledge about
the car, the knowledge of the tracks, and the solid support team, which is what
I bring to Victory Motorsports, and what they bring to me,?? explains
Buckles.
Carl Long, a resident of Troutman, North Carolina, has a solid 22 years of
racing under his belt. Raised in Roxboro, North Carolina, Long started
racing in the early 80’s, and won his first Track Championship at South Boston
Speedway in 1987. In 1992, Long was named the Winston Racing Rookie of the Year
at Orange County Speedway. In 2000, Long made his first Winston Cup race,
and in 2004 made a career high of six Nextel Cup races. Carl Long has
participated at several levels of NASCAR racing, including Nextel Cup Series, Busch
Series, and the Craftsman Truck Series. Teaming up with Victory Motorsports
now gives Long the opportunity to channel his energy and passion to become
the next NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion.
“Joining Victory Motorsports is like the reunion of a family that has been
apart, and now has the opportunity to come together and make some great things
happen. I am truly excited about representing this team, I have great
support, and an excellent opportunity to excel in NASCAR racing,?? says Long.
Victory Motorsports is owned by Terance Mathis, former All-Pro Wide Receiver
for the Atlanta Falcons. “Our mission is simple, WIN. Victory Motorsports
is a new breed of racing. We will bring excitement, entertainment, and fun
to NASCAR. We will also bring the minority community to NASCAR, and in turn
bring NASCAR to the minority community. Not only will we be standing in the
Winner’s Circle, but we will stand there with integrity, equality, and
respect,?? says Mathis.
