BorgWarner Variable Force Solenoid Enhances Performance of GM V6 Engines

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 20 -- BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems supplies the variable force solenoid (VFS) that is being launched on a new family of General Motors V6 engines. The product is designed to work in conjunction with a camshaft phaser as part of an engine's variable cam timing (VCT) system. VCT precisely controls the flow of air into and out of an engine by allowing the camshaft to be dynamically phased relative to its crankshaft. The ability to dynamically control valve timing results in improved fuel economy, lower exhaust emissions and greater engine power.

The VFS is the main interface between an engine's computer and the camshaft phaser, delivering exactly the right amount of force to control engine valve timing for optimal performance.

"BorgWarner truly 'pushed the innovation envelope' in creating this VFS product," said Alfred Weber, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems. "Our customers can now expect significantly enhanced performance in terms of stroke, force and hysteresis in a compact package."

A patent is pending on the VFS, which is manufactured at BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems in Dixon, Illinois, for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2006 Chevrolet Impala, and Pontiac G6 with 3.5-liter and 3.9-liter V6 engines.

BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems is a leading designer and supplier of components and systems for engine air and thermal management designed to control emissions and reduce fuel consumption.
