Delphi Supplies New Thermal Technology to GM Europe

2005 Zafira features energy-saving air conditioning condenser and compressor

TROY, Mich., June 7 -- Delphi Corp. continues to strengthen its thermal business by supplying one of General Motors Europe's most successful programs.

Delphi supplies the powertrain cooling system and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system on the recently launched 2005 Zafira multi- passenger vehicle. The Zafira, which carries both the Opel and Vauxhall badges, is a high-volume seller in its vehicle segment in Europe.

Steven Kiefer, managing director of European operations for Delphi Thermal & Interior, said this business is critically important to Delphi's future.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for us to grow with a customer that has ambitious and exciting plans for its product portfolio," Kiefer said. "We are committed to providing GM Europe with the excellence it expects for such an important program."

A key technology featured on the Zafira's air conditioning system is Delphi's Integral Receiver/Dehydrator (IRD) Condenser -- a compact tube and center (CTC) condenser coupled with a receiver dehydrator to maximize performance in a single economical package. This technology can be applied using either a 12mm-deep condenser known as a CTC12i or an 18mm-deep condenser known as a CTC18i, depending on the engine application.

Delphi's CTC12i is the thinnest and lightest condenser in the automobile industry and was first introduced in the North American market on the Saturn Ion. It allows Delphi's customers to meet weight reduction goals while maintaining the highest levels of performance and passenger comfort. Its significantly reduced packaging space frees up premium real estate under the hood. It also significantly lowers the R-134a refrigerant charge while reducing energy consumption, an overall benefit to the environment.

At the heart of the air conditioning system lies Delphi's Compact Variable Compressor (CVC). The CVC boasts a highly efficient mode of operation that saves energy while producing low levels of noise and vibration.

Delphi also supplies the front struts, rear shocks, radio, CD player and MP3 player on the vehicle. The systems and components are produced at Delphi's various European manufacturing facilities including Ostrow, Poland, Douai, France, Donchery, France and Balassagyarmat, Hungary.
