The Which Report Predicts Future for Child Car Seat Safety

ANDOVER, Hampshire, June 2 -- The Which report on child car seats published today (2nd June) highlights that the future of children travelling more safely in cars is linked to the ISOFIX system.

Which believes that 'Isofix seats are safer' and recommends two seats to take children from birth right through to 18kg (around 4 years). It says that the Britax Cosy Tot Isofix seat is 'the best of the bunch' and suitable for babies up to13kg(9-12 months) whilst the Duo Plus Isofix is ideal for children from 9kg - 18kg.

Isofix is a method of fixing a child car seat directly to the car without using a seat-belt. It is the new standard for car seat installation and is being adopted by vehicle manufacturers worldwide.

The main benefit of Isofix is that the system creates a rigid link between the child seat and the car. As well as this extra solidity, it also removes the risk of slack installation - which is one of the key misuse areas with products installed with an adult seat-belt.

Britax fitting checks show that over 30% of child car seats were fitted incorrectly by parents, while another 31% needed minor adjustment. In world- wide tests of ISOFIX seats, 96% were fitted correctly by parents.

It is estimated that around 75% of new cars are now fitted with Isofix connections. By February 2006, all new ECE approved vehicles must be equipped with ISOFIX anchorage points.

Britax have worked with leading car manufacturers in a major crash testing programme over many years to arrive at this excellent solution to the future of child car seat safety. They are also currently the only manufacturer to have ISOFIX products in their range in the UK market.

The development of the ISOFIX system forms part of the Britax commitment to on-going development and improvement to ensure that all of their products achieve the highest standards of safety and comfort.
