ATA and AAA Oklahoma Demo Highway Safety Measures

National Share the Road Safety Program Visits Oklahoma City
to Save Lives on Oklahoma Highways

As many as 166,000 vehicles travel I-44 through Oklahoma City each day.
Most automobile drivers were never taught what they can do to
avoid an accident with a tractor-trailer.

Who: The American Trucking Associations (ATA), AAA Oklahoma, the
Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, and
            the Oklahoma Trucking Association.

What: A demonstration of highway safety measures will be conducted for
local news media, including "ride-alongs" in tractor-trailers,
as part of the national Share the Road safety tour visiting
            Oklahoma City, OK.

When: Thursday, March 24, 2005, 10:00 AM CST.

Where: UPS, 901 S. Portland, Oklahoma City, OK (see driving directions
            below.)

Summary: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of accident-
free driving, ATA, AAA Oklahoma, and others, will demonstrate
safety measures critical to saving lives on Oklahoma highways.
A static demonstration with simulated highway lanes will show
how cars and trucks get into accidents. A professional truck
driver will provide truck ride-alongs for news reporters and
photographers, announcing tips on blind spots, driving in
construction zones, safe-merging techniques, and stopping and
            following distances.

This safety advice is critical for Oklahoma drivers because:
            * 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a
truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
              Administration).

            * Up to 75% of all truck-involved fatalities are unintentionally
initiated by car drivers (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety).

            * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and
              save lives.

Directions: From Downtown take I-40 west to May Avenue Exit. Go right
onto May Avenue, then take first left onto Reno. Off Reno
take a Left onto S. Portland to 901.
