Over 250,000 Fans Will Travel Through Daytona During Speedweek; America's Safest Highway Drivers Will Demonstrate How Fans Can be as Safe as the NASCAR Drivers at the Daytona International Speedway
DAYTONA, Fla., Feb. 17 -- The American Trucking Associations and Florida Highway Patrol will demonstrate safety measures for Daytona Speedweek.
Who: The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Florida Trucking Association. What: A demonstration of critical highway safety measures will be conducted for news media, as part of the national Share the Road tour being hosted by the Daytona International Speedway. When: Friday, February 18, 2005, 10:00 AM EST Where: Daytona International Speedway, Superstretch exhibit area (see directions below). Summary: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of accident- free driving, ATA, and the Florida Highway Patrol, will demonstrate safety measures critical to saving lives on the highways during Speedweek at the Daytona International Speedway. A static demonstration with simulated highway lanes will show how cars and trucks get into accidents. A professional truck driver will offer tips on blind spots, safe-merging techniques, and stopping and following distances. This safety advice is critical for Daytona fans because: * 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). * Most drivers were never taught how to share the road safely with trucks. * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and save lives.
