Sonic Automotive, Inc. Announces Hiring of James D. Evans as New Division Vice President

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 14, 2004 -- Sonic Automotive, Inc. today announced that Mr. James D. Evans has joined the Company in the position of Division Vice President - West. Mr. Evans will be responsible for oversight of operations for four of the Company's Regional platforms in Northern California, Southern California, Las Vegas and Denver.

Commenting on Mr. Evans' appointment, Sonic's President and Chief Operating Officer, Jeffrey C. Rachor said, "Jim Evans is a rare operational talent in our industry and we are delighted that he has chosen to join our company. Jim's extensive experience operating large multiple dealership configurations with both public and private consolidators, along with his knowledge of the California markets, makes him uniquely qualified to drive improved results in our Western Division."

Prior to joining Sonic Automotive, Mr. Evans was most recently employed by AutoNation, Inc. as District President for that company's Northwest District. Mr. Evans has also held key leadership roles with United Auto Group, Ford Investment Enterprises Corporation, and FirstAmerica Automotive, Inc.
