FORD ENGINEER DECLARES: 'BRING ON THE HYDROGEN'

SHANGHAI October 14, 2004; Despite the higher fuel economy and lower emissions of hybrid electric vehicles, the use of hydrogen, either in fuel cells or internal combustion engines, offers even greater benefits, said Dr. Arun Jaura, Technical Leader, Vehicle Engineering, for the Escape Hybrid, at the Challenge Bibendum being held in Asia this year for the first time.

"Make no mistake," Jaura said, "the Escape Hybrid is easier on the environment through reduced emissions. It offers far better gasoline mileage and a smooth ride. The battery is recharged from the vehicle's own energy that otherwise would be lost. And it automatically switches between power sources as needed. Ford's Escape Hybrid is 100 percent SUV and 100 percent Hybrid."

"Hydrogen gives us near zero emissions and higher fuel economy. And hydrogen can be used either in fuel cells or internal combustion engines that have traditionally used gasoline or diesel," Jaura noted. "So, bring on the hydrogen!"

Ford is the only automaker with a product plan and a multi technology development effort in place to move to a hydrogen-powered future. On display at the Challenge Bibendum are two Ford Focus fuel cell sedans along with two Escape Hybrids which are in production in the U.S. Ford is also showing its industry first Hydrogen Hybrid Research Vehicle (H2RV). The H2RV combines a 2.3-liter internal combustion engine powered by hydrogen, boosted by a supercharger, coupled with a patented Modular Hybrid Transmission System. Ford is the only automaker to develop this powertrain combination and put it into operation. The hydrogen vehicles are based off the best-selling Ford Focus wagon.
