More Than 1.5 Million Expected on Legendary Cruise Strip
HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich., Aug. 19 -- On Saturday, August 21, 2004, the metro Detroit suburbs host the largest one day automotive event in the world, the Woodward Dream Cruise, celebrating its 10th anniversary. More than 40,000 classic street worthy cars will cruise 16 miles down legendary Woodward Avenue from Detroit through the nine communities of Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak to the delight of more than 1.5 million spectators.
Woodward Dream Cruise celebrates the heydays of the fifties and sixties when Woodward was the heart and soul of American cruising in the city that put America on wheels. Combined with the music and fashions of the era, the Woodward Dream Cruise celebrates the nostalgia of bygone days in the cars that made them so special.
People from all over the world come to celebrate the Motor City's love affair with cars. The focus is on family fun, with special events, live music and local and national performers, children's activities, a variety of food and an amazing array of classics, hot rods and custom cars.
Each city provides the activities and entertainment and there are numerous "Elvis" and "Marilyn" sightings everywhere as well as pony tails, poodle skirts, rolled up t-shirts and real live performers including Chubby Checker, Mitch Ryder and Isaac Hayes.
Nearly 100 local charities will benefit from the event through sales of official merchandise and refreshments.
