CASCAR Super Series
RESULTS & SUMMARY: Mosport Int'l Raceway - Clarington 200
June 20, 2004
Jeff Lapcevich continues his CASCAR road course domination at Mosport Int'l
Raceway
OSHAWA, ON - Jeff Lapcevich is CASCAR's undisputed king of the road
courses. Following his win in today's Clarington 200 at the 2.459-mile,
10-turn Mosport Int'l Raceway, the Tim Horton's / Fastline Chevy driver has
won the past three CASCAR Super Series road races. Lapcevich won both
CASCAR outings at the Toronto and Vancouver Indys in '03.
On Sunday afternoon, the Caistor Centre, ON driver started fourth in the
field of 25 who took the green flag for the Super Series' fourth race of
the season and passed race leader Don Thomson Jr. on lap 18 of the 51-lap
chase. Lapcevich stayed out while many of his rivals for the victory
pitted. During that time, he was able to amass a considerable lead prior to
making his one and only stop, on lap 31. His lead was so big, in fact, that
he was able to stop for two tires and fuel and still return to the track
with a large gap between himself and second-place driver Peter Gibbons, in
his Canadian Tire Chevy.
Lapcevich's decision to take on only two tires contributed significantly
to his win, as his rivals spent more time in the pits taking on four tires
during their green-flag stops. Many of them were counting on a caution flag
to appear, following their stops, to nullify the disadvantage of their
lengthy pit visits. But it never came. The race was slowed by just one
early caution for a total of three laps.
At the finish, Lapcevich cruised past the checkered flag over 21 seconds
ahead of Gibbons. Don Thomson's Home Hardware Chevy came home third, five
seconds back of Gibbons. For Thomson, it was the first podium finish of the
season for the three-time National champion.
Following four CASCAR Super Series races in '04, Gibbons leads the points
chase after posting a pair of wins, a second and a fifth in the first third
of the schedule. Avenue / NMT Dodge driver Dave Whitlock is second, 28
points behind Gibbons.
The Clarington 200 was the fourth Super Series race in as many weekends.
The teams will enjoy next weekend off as they prepare for their return to
Cayuga 2000 Speedway for the Canada Day Shootout on the July 3-4 weekend.
