1937 Classic Ranked Among World's Most Sought After Collector Cars, Epitomizes Mystique of This Year's Marque -- The Alfa Romeo

The Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance Car Show announced today that one of the world's most renown classic cars, a jet black 1937 Alfa Romeo Spider, will highlight the field of more than 200 vintage and classic cars at its 48th annual show on Sunday, May 2, 2004.

Known as the McClure Halley car after its original owner, the prized Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Short Chassis Spider has been shown in car shows around the world for many years and is a perennial winner. It was awarded "Best of Show" at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1988, at Torrey Pines in 1999 and at the Louis Vuitton Class in Paris in 2000.

"This is far more than a pristine classic car," said Jonathan Spira, co-chair of the Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance. "This Alfa is a marvel of innovation, fine motorcar engineering, art and design. It is still driven regularly and is extremely reliable, safe and very fast, easily cruising at 120 MPH. We're thrilled that we'll have it among our field of cars."

The Alfa 8C 2900B was the creation of acclaimed Alfa engineer Vittorio Jano. The "B" suffix marked it as the street version of the successful 8C 2900A racer, which was a two-seat version of Alfa's famed 1935 Grand Prix racecar. Thirty of these cars were built, but only four were short chassis versions such as the one that will be exhibited in Hillsborough.

Ordered with extensive customizations by McClure Halley, of New York City, it was used as Alfa's show car at the 1937 Milan Motor Show. Among the car's unique features is extensive chrome plating (even the suspension and gas lines), a machine-turned firewall, decorative engraving on the exterior brightwork and a sumptuous interior. The upholstery is Belgian leather; it had a silk top and diamond-etched windshield posts.

The longest continuously running car show on the West Coast, the Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance has earned a reputation as one of the finest classic car shows of the season. It attracts more than 7,000 visitors and participants, and exhibits a select group of more than 200 vintage and classic cars dating back to the turn of the century.

Proceeds of the Concours and Tour d'Elegance benefit the Hillsborough Public Schools.
