SwRI Will Introduce New Engine Technologies At Beijing Exhibit

Southwest Research Institute® received a 2003 R&D 100 award for the design and development of one of the past year’s 100 most technologically significant accomplishments. SwRI engineers designed and developed a virtual vehicle transmission test cell, an innovative test apparatus capable of simulating on-track vehicle powertrain operations in the laboratory.
SAN ANTONIO--March 31, 2004--Southwest Research Institute(R) (SwRI) will introduce new engine and emissions technologies at an international automotive industry conference to be held in Beijing on April 19-22.

At the Engine China 2004 Exposition, the Institute will feature models of SwRI's award-winning virtual vehicle transmission test cell (VVTTC) for automotive component development and testing; the patent-pending FOCAS(R) system for aging catalysts; and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for diesel emission control. In conjunction with the exposition, SwRI engineers will host seminars covering topics such as emission controls, alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles, and engine design, analysis and testing.

Bruce B. Bykowski, executive director of the Engine and Emissions Research Department in SwRI's Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division, is coordinating Institute technical activities at the event. "SwRI is informing government regulatory agencies and original equipment manufacturers about current emissions control technology trends and advanced powertrain systems. As an independent research and development laboratory, the Institute has developed numerous techniques and hardware designs during the past quarter-century to improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle emissions," he said.

SwRI exhibits can be seen in Booth 1B14 at the exposition. In 2003, R&D Magazine presented the VVTTC with an R&D 100 award, designating the test apparatus as one of the past year's 100 most significant technological achievements.

Seminar attendees will include representatives from engine and automotive component manufacturers, international automobile manufacturers, research and design institutes, academia and government regulatory agencies.

Internationally noted for its work in powertrain design and emissions control, the Institute will also discuss gasoline and diesel engine emissions in relation to U.S. and European standards and SwRI-developed emissions equipment, tests and other technology in an invitation-only emissions control conference in Beijing the following week.
