GM to Invest $175 Million in SUV Plant

JANESVILLE, Wis. January 28, 2004; The AP reported that General Motors Corp. plans to invest $175 million to boost production at its Janesville, Wis., sport utility vehicle assembly plant, the company announced Wednesday.

The world's largest automaker will use the money to renovate the plant's body shop and general assembly areas for what GM spokeswoman Kelly Patten called future truck production. She declined to elaborate, saying product details would be released later.

The plant produces the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

Gov. Jim Doyle, who joined company officials at the plant for a press conference, announced the state will give GM a $5 million incentive package.

The plant, about 40 miles southeast of Madison, employs about 3,900 workers. They built nearly 258,000 vehicles last year.

The renovations are scheduled to begin later this year.
