Special AAA Gas Survey Finds Only 9 Percent of Metro Detroit Stations Pumping Gas

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 15, 2003 -- In a special Fuel Gauge telephone survey this morning of 54 gasoline stations in the Metro Detroit area, AAA Michigan found only five able to pump gas due to the power outage areas in Southeast Michigan. Thirteen stations are open to sell candy, snacks and other products and 36 are closed.

Two of the stations able to pump are in Trenton and Woodhaven, where power service has been restored. Several other stations are operating their pumps with portable generators.

The stations that are able to pump reported they were selling self-serve regular at the same price they were charging on Monday of this week when AAA Michigan's regular Fuel Gauge survey reported an average price of $1.588 per gallon in the Metro Detroit area.

AAA advises motorists to curtail non-essential travel, since there are many stations unable to provide gas and many traffic signals are not working.

Drivers should treat intersections as 4-way stops, pay attention to traffic conditions and be patient.
