Mazda Sales Rise in July to Begin Second Half of 2003

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1, 2003 -- Led by record-setting sales of its highly acclaimed Tribute sport utility vehicle, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported July sales of 26,737 units -- a 2.6 percent increase from the same period last year. Overall, Mazda's year-to-date sales total 145,643 units -- down 6.0 percent from 2002.

The sporty and versatile Tribute posted its best sales month in the vehicle's history, selling 5,657 units in July -- a 15.9 percent increase from the same period last year. In addition, MNAO reported first-month sales of 1,342 units for its eagerly anticipated RX-8 sports car.

"Mazda remains excited by the continued rise of consumer confidence and spending, especially in light of the tremendous products we are offering car shoppers," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO. "Our new RX-8 is off to a fantastic start after only a few weeks in dealerships, while the sales of Tribute continue to impress. We look forward to a prosperous second half of the year in 2003."

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and services support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.
