I-70, Vail Pass to Remain Open During Repairs - Drivers Should Use Caution

VAIL, Colo., June 6 -- I-70 will remain open while repairs are made to the damaged culvert on Vail Pass, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced today. CDOT also said that repairs are expected to be completed within two to three weeks.

"I have asked CDOT to expedite repairs so this important section of Interstate highway can return to normal operation as soon as possible," said Governor Bill Owens. "It is important to stress that I-70 will remain open while repairs are being made. Drivers should be cautious since only one lane will be open in each direction, but it appears that delays will be minimal."

CDOT has reduced the speed limit to 35 mph in the repair area and the speed limit will be strictly enforced.

"Safety is a priority," said CDOT Executive Director Tom Norton. "We have flaggers posted throughout the work zone, a reduced speed limit and strict enforcement from the Colorado State Patrol. However, since this is not an ideal situation, we really need the help and cooperation of drivers for the next few weeks."

The highway, which reopened Wednesday, is reduced to a single lane in each direction for approximately 1 1/2 miles, just east of the East Vail exit (#180). CSP will be actively ticketing any driver who speeds or drives recklessly through the area.

Temporary restrictions remain in effect for all large trucks traveling through the work zone, including a 35 mph speed limit for westbound trucks from the top of Vail Pass to Vail. All vehicles wider than 12 feet are restricted from using Vail Pass while the work zone is in place. CDOT is advising truck drivers that both Vail Pass runaway truck ramps remain open. In case of an emergency, trucks will be allowed and encouraged to cross over to the closed westbound lanes and use the lower truck ramp at mile 182.2.

The entire highway initially was closed to all traffic this past Sunday after a broken culvert created the large sinkhole in the westbound lanes, just east of Vail.
