AAA Texas: Statewide Gas Prices Level Off

HOUSTON--May 30, 2003--Gasoline prices leveled off across Texas as only slight changes up and down were recorded over the week of the Memorial Day holiday, according to the Weekend Gas Watch, compiled by AAA Texas. The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at popular destinations for motoring trips.
The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded self-serve is $1.382, which is a half-cent lower than last week's level, 7 cents below the price last month and 4 cents higher than last year. Of the major metropolitan areas in Texas, Dallas had the highest price with an average of $1.405 per gallon, while motorists in Corpus Christi have the lowest price of $1.285.
"Higher wholesale gasoline prices and tight dealer profits had caused rising prices across Texas, but motorists are getting a break now that prices have leveled off," said Carol Thorp, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "There is still a chance that pump prices could inch up another 2-3 cents statewide in the next couple of weeks."
