Top Fashion Students Awarded by General Motors for Creating Hot Designs Using Vehicle Parts

    CHICAGO--May 28, 2003--

General Motors Creates Radical Design Competition, Awards Winners at International Academy of Design and Technology's Student Fashion Show

A dress made of seatbelts from a Pontiac Vibe and a skirt adorned with 100 General Motors keys created a stir at IMAGINE 2003, the International Academy of Design and Technology's (IADT) annual student fashion show held last Thursday night in the Great Hall of Union Station. The designs were the creation of two IADT students, Corey Lemont Thicklen of Jackson Park, Ill. and Horacio Nieto Jr. of Elsdon, Ill., who won a design competition created by General Motors as part of their title sponsorship of the fashion show.
"We're incredibly proud and truly impressed with Corey and Horacio's stylish interpretations of GM vehicles," said Eileen Healy, General Manager for GM's North Central Region. "They helped show-goers see the hip side of General Motors."
The winners were chosen based strictly on the creativity of their designs. The two students won unique awards for their efforts. Corey Lemont Thicklen won an all-expenses paid trip to Eyes on Design, a weekend-long event with the who's who in automotive design at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich. The weekend will include a black-tie dinner, vehicle design demonstrations, networking, and the largest-ever concept car show. Horacio Nieto, Jr. won a $1000 scholarship and $250 book voucher.
Thicklen and Nieto designed ten garments inspired by five General Motors vehicles: Chevrolet Corvette, HUMMER H2, Cadillac EXT, Pontiac Vibe and Saturn ION. The five vehicles were on display at the fashion show. Crowds gathered to take photos with the vehicles and mingle before the official GM awards ceremony and fashion show.
