The topic of road safety is as old as the automobile. Already in 1889 Karl Benz claimed his motor carriage was "comfortable and safe". However, until late in the 1930s engineers concentrated more on improvements such as more powerful engines and practicality. This changed when Béla Barényi joined Daimler-Benz at the end of the 1930s.
