AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 21 -- Erwin Raphael,
Chrysler Group Plant Manager, Jefferson North (Mich.) Assembly Plant, has been
awarded the 2002 President's Award by Career Communications Group (CCG),
publisher of USBE & Information Technology magazine.
Raphael joins a select group of individuals who were honored for their
technical and managerial contributions to a large corporation or a subsidiary.
The award was presented at the 16th annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards
Conference ceremony in Baltimore, on Saturday, February 15.
The Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference is the nation's largest
career and professional development conference for African-American
executives, professionals and college and high school students. More than
10,000 African-American professionals participate in the three-day event that
includes a career fair, workshops and an awards ceremony.
Raphael was selected for the President's Award because of his career
accomplishments in the automotive industry. As plant manager of Jefferson
North Assembly Plant, located in Detroit, he heads a production staff of more
than 3,000 people responsible for manufacturing the Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee.
More than 200,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees are sold in the U.S. each year, making
it one of Chrysler Group's best-selling vehicles and one of the leaders in the
sport-utility segment. "Erwin Raphael has been a positive and enthusiastic
role-model for his employees and peers," said Tom LaSorda, Chrysler Group
Executive Vice President -- Manufacturing. "The combination of his business
and technical acumen has helped Chrysler Group remain a leader in building one
of the best sport utility vehicles on the road today."
Since joining the Chrysler Group in 2001 as Senior Manager of Corporate
Quality, he has held successive positions of increasing responsibility.
In addition to his daily job responsibilities at Chrysler Group, Raphael
finds the time to play guitar in a gospel band and coach a junior high
basketball team. A native of St Croix, V.I., Raphael earned an undergraduate
degree in mathematics and chemistry from Ohio State University in 1989.
