Chrysler Group Plant Manager Honored for Career Achievement
* Erwin Raphael Receives President's Award * Black Engineer of the Year Conference Cites 'Role Model' * Ohio State University Alumnus Excels in the Automotive Industry AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 21 -- Erwin Raphael, Chrysler Group Plant Manager, Jefferson North (Mich.) Assembly Plant, has been awarded the 2002 President's Award by Career Communications Group (CCG), publisher of USBE & Information Technology magazine. Raphael joins a select group of individuals who were honored for their technical and managerial contributions to a large corporation or a subsidiary. The award was presented at the 16th annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference ceremony in Baltimore, on Saturday, February 15. The Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference is the nation's largest career and professional development conference for African-American executives, professionals and college and high school students. More than 10,000 African-American professionals participate in the three-day event that includes a career fair, workshops and an awards ceremony. Raphael was selected for the President's Award because of his career accomplishments in the automotive industry. As plant manager of Jefferson North Assembly Plant, located in Detroit, he heads a production staff of more than 3,000 people responsible for manufacturing the Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee. More than 200,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees are sold in the U.S. each year, making it one of Chrysler Group's best-selling vehicles and one of the leaders in the sport-utility segment. "Erwin Raphael has been a positive and enthusiastic role-model for his employees and peers," said Tom LaSorda, Chrysler Group Executive Vice President -- Manufacturing. "The combination of his business and technical acumen has helped Chrysler Group remain a leader in building one of the best sport utility vehicles on the road today." Since joining the Chrysler Group in 2001 as Senior Manager of Corporate Quality, he has held successive positions of increasing responsibility. In addition to his daily job responsibilities at Chrysler Group, Raphael finds the time to play guitar in a gospel band and coach a junior high basketball team. A native of St Croix, V.I., Raphael earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and chemistry from Ohio State University in 1989.
