LA Auto Club: International Turmoil Pushes Gas Prices Higher
LOS ANGELES--Jan. 14, 2003--The January monthly average price of gasoline in Southern California rose 5.2 cents, compared with last month, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's monthly Fuel Gauge Report.The Southern California average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.611, up from the December 2002 average of $1.559. The November 2002 average was $1.618. The state average rose to $1.641, up 5.5 cents since Dec. 10.
San Francisco Bay area motorists now pay an average of $1.720, up 5 cents from last month. The lowest average price in the state can be found in Bakersfield and Chico, where drivers can pump regular self-serve unleaded gasoline for $1.470.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline rose nearly 10 cents to $1.468. Georgia has the lowest state average at $1.346, about 13 cents higher than last month.
"Even though Saudi Arabia has committed to increasing production, international uncertainties, including the prolonged strike in Venezuela, have helped to push prices higher on the speculation that there might be tight supplies in the spring," said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp.
