Toyota Announces Best Sales Year in Its 45-Year History, Breaks Sales Record for Seventh Year in a Row

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 3, 2003; Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported year-end total sales of 1,756,127 vehicles, up 0.9 percent over last year and the company's best sales performance in its 45-year history.

Camry became the best-selling car in America for the fifth time in the past six years, while the Lexus Division retained it crown as the best-selling luxury brand in America. The 2002 year-end total also marks the 13th consecutive year that Toyota sold more than one million cars and trucks.

"This was a year for consumers," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "They pulled us through a year of economic and political uncertainty, and provide us with cautious optimism for 2003. A business sector rebound will add momentum to the economic recovery, and vehicle affordability will be at near record levels."

Total sales for December were 141,491, an increase of 2.0 percent over the same period last year. There were 25 selling days compared to 26 last December, which accounted for percentage increases on a daily selling rate.

Toyota Division's best-ever year-end total of 1,522,018 vehicles, up 0.3 percent, marked the ninth consecutive year that the Toyota Division has topped one million units.

The Toyota Division recorded best-ever year-end passenger car sales of 836,110, an increase of 2.2 percent. The record-setting year was paced by the popular Camry, which earned its "best-selling car in America" title by posting year-end sales of 434,145, up 11.2 percent.

The Corolla posted December sales of 19,610, an increase of 23.7 percent. Total year-end Corolla sales were 254,360, up 3.8 percent from last year. The Prius electric/gas hybrid sedan recorded best-ever December sales of 1,790, up 4.6 percent. Year-end Prius sales were a best-ever 20,119, up 29.3 percent.

Toyota Division light truck sales were led by the Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) with best-ever December sales of 9,607, up 22.3 percent. Total 2002 year-end Highlander sales were a best-ever 113,134, up 30.5 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV also reported best-ever year-end sales of 70,187, an increase of 2.4 percent. Sequoia also reported best-ever December sales of 6,366, an increase of 8.9 percent. The RAV4 compact SUV recorded year-end sales of 86,601, up 0.3 percent. The all-new 4Runner mid- size SUV posted December sales of 7,200, an increase of 6.2 percent. The Land Cruiser full-size SUV recorded 730 total sales for December, up 49.4 percent.

The Lexus Division enjoyed its best-ever sales year with 234,109 units sold, an increase of 4.5 percent. The Lexus Division also enjoyed its best-ever sales month, posting 24,845 total sales, up 16.4 percent over the same period last year.

Lexus passenger car sales posted best-ever year-end sales of 149,725, an increase of 9.1 percent and strong December sales of 13,409, up 3.2 percent. The ES 300 luxury sedan recorded December sales of 7,188, an increase of 25.4 percent, and best-ever total year-end sales of 71,450, up 59.3 percent. The SC 430 hardtop convertible posted best-ever year-end sales of 14,462, an increase of 0.9 percent.

Lexus light truck sales posted best-ever December sales of 11,436, up 36.9 percent. The RX 300 SUV set the sales pace with 8,280 units sold, up 6.6 percent over the same period last year. The all-new GX 470 SUV launched in December with strong sales of 2,190. The LX 470 full-size SUV recorded 966 units sold, up 66.1 percent.

There were 307 selling days in 2002, which equals the number in 2001.
