HOLLYWOOD BEACH, Fla., Dec. 11, 2002; The alternative transportation industry took a significant leap forward today at the Electric Transportation Industry Conference with the launch of the ZENN® (Zero Emission, No Noise), the world's first battery-powered, fully enclosed, heated and air-conditioned low-speed vehicle (LSV).

"The ZENN is the most car-like vehicle in its class," said Ian Clifford, FGC president. "It is fully enclosed and heated and air conditioned. It has all lights and signals, secure doors, power windows, disc brakes, automotive steering and suspension -- even a stereo system and keyless entry. Other LSVs offer very few, if any, of these features. The ZENN is what neighborhood electric vehicles were always meant to be."

Consistent with some of its LSV predecessors, the ZENN delivers substantial, measurable environmental benefits compared to gas-powered automobiles. "Environmentally conscious consumers will feel great buying a ZENN," said Clifford. "By using a stylish and comfortable emissions-free vehicle, they will know that they are eliminating the 7,700 pounds (3,500 kg) of tailpipe emissions that the average American car coughs out every year, thereby reducing their personal contributions to global warming."

But unlike all its LSV predecessors, the ZENN also delivers all the traditional automotive features demanded -- and needed -- by consumers to make it a practical, viable mode of transportation. Clifford said earlier generations are often viewed as golf cart-like vehicles, without the comfort, convenience and safety of a more traditional car. But the ZENN changes that.

Given its features, the ZENN is the first LSV suitable for all climates, which considerably broadens the market. Clifford says he expects a warm reception for the ZENN in gated communities, urban environments, college campuses and in many fleet applications, including government agencies (traffic patrol and neighborhood policing) and new mobility urban solutions (car-sharing programs and Station Car applications) throughout North America.

Clifford pointed out that another fundamental criticism of earlier LSVs has been equally well addressed with the ZENN -- safety. Traditional carmakers often have pointed to LSV safety concerns, suggesting these vehicles don't belong on mainstream roads with traditional cars. Clifford said the ZENN body type has more than 15 years of on-road experience in Europe. Accident statistics there show that LSVs sharing the road with larger, internal-combustion cars are safer, primarily because LSVs operate at lower speeds.

Clifford said FGC is partnering with international manufacturers to build the ZENN, with the capacity to ramp up to an annual production of 10,000 ZENNs within a six-month period. "Unlike other LSV manufacturers that produce their vehicles as a mere sideline to their more traditional automotive businesses, we're dedicating our careers to the advancement of neighborhood electric vehicles," Clifford said.
