GM Powertrain Defiance Plant And UAW Local 211 Answer The Call To Aid Victims

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The GM Powertrain (GMPT) Defiance plant and UAW Local 211 took immediate action to help victims of the November 10 tornado. The plant answered the call by Radio Station WDFM - 98.1 Mix, for tarps to aid tornado victims by donating 20,000 square feet of plastic sheeting.

"Once again the Defiance plant has exemplified the spirit of America - by pulling together and working as a team to help with this crisis," said Mike Chapman, Defiance plant manager. UAW Shop Chairman Larry Rowe added, "GM Powertrain Defiance and UAW Local 211 are always quick to respond to any crisis. Not only are we concerned about the quality of the castings we produce, we are just as concerned about helping the community."

The story behind the headlines demonstrates the teamwork that continues to make the GMPT Defiance plant a success. On Tuesday, November 12, 2002 Jennifer Eureste was listening to Radio Station WDFM when she heard a request for tarps to aid victims of the recent tornado. She called her husband, Joe Eureste, a UAW Local 211 benefit representative at the Defiance plant, and told him about the request. Joe told her that he would contact the plant leadership to see if the Defiance plant could help.

Soon he was in the office of Personnel Director Pete Felton explaining the request. Felton responded immediately by contacting the Defiance Plant Safety Director Joe Daly. They decided the best course of action would be to purchase plastic sheeting, rather than look for used tarps to donate. The three of them drove to a local store, purchased 20,000 square feet of plastic sheeting, and within minutes they dropped it off at the WDFM collection site.
