New 15-Passenger Armored Mercedes Vario 815D

NEW YORK, Sept. 11 Electric Fuel Corporation introduced today the new armored Mercedes Vario 815D minibus from MDT. The vehicle passed a rigorous three-week test at the Israeli Defense Force testing facilities and manufacturing has begun for various customers with backlog orders reaching the $1 million level. Earlier this quarter, Electric Fuel acquired a majority stake in MDT Protective Industries Ltd., an Israeli vehicle armoring company.

The armored Vario 815D provides passenger compartment 360 degree protection from AK 47 and M-16 gunfire. The motor and various vehicle components are protected as well.

In the armoring process, the windshield is replaced with armored glass. New armored power windows are installed for the driver and passenger side windows, with a fast-action mechanism developed by MDT. Fixed armored windows are provided for the passenger compartment. Lightweight overlapping armor panels are placed inside the doors and around the passenger compartment. The front of the vehicle includes overlaps between windshield and motor to provide firewall protection from an oncoming attack. The roof is fully armored, and run-flat tires are optional.

Every effort was taken in the design of the armoring process to retain the vehicle's "look and feel." Impact on vehicle performance, payload, geometry, stability and handling is minimized; retaining the manufacturer's specifications. The exterior remains virtually intact.

The Israeli experiment unit in the army has tested this vehicle for 3 weeks and it passed successfully.

2.The protection includes: A.Transparent protection:

Windscreen – replacing the original window with a matching armored window.

Drivers and co-passenger door windows – with a 19.5 cm opening ability (electric opening).

Installing 6 constant windows in the side of the vehicle next to the passenger’s seats.

Rear windows are replaced with armored windows.

The original window mechanism is being replaced by an improved M.D.T. mechanism that has been developed and produced in M.D.T. – this mechanism can lift an armored window within 3-5 seconds.

The windows are made in “ORAN” ZUBA- Israel one of the largest factories in the world for armored windows.

B.Opaque Protection: The door protection is being placed inside the door (the inner space) and with full overlapping between the panels. The sidewall protection includes full overlapping between all of the panels in the front of the vehicle - considering the “edge factor”.
