GM Racing to Sponsor SEMA Fine Art Exhibit
DETROIT - GM Racing will sponsor the new look of the 2002 Specialty Equipment
Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Fine Art Exhibit at the annual show in Las
Vegas, Nev., from Tuesday, November 5 through Friday, November 8.
"SEMA's rapid growth is evidence that the automobile is revered as much more
than just a means of transportation," said Gary Claudio, GM Racing group
marketing manager. "Our cars have become an integral part of our lifestyle,
a rolling statement of who we are. A natural extension of this phenomenon is
the blossoming interest in the world of automotive art.
"It is an extremely diversified field, ranging from the design of a
modern-day racing machine to a bronze of a classic street rod. Just as we
are committed to competitive excellence on the race track, GM Racing is proud
to help promote and preserve the images that portray our automotive
heritage."
This year's edition marks the 16th time that artists from around the world
will be on display at the SEMA show. The list of expected exhibitors reads
like a "Who's Who" in the automotive art world, including such names as Sam
Bass and Garry Hill, who are best known for their NASCAR-themed work, as well
as renowned Formula 1 artists Gavin McLeod, Nicholas Watt and Bob Seabeck.
The fast-paced exhibit will not be limited to only traditional art forms such
as paintings, prints and sculptures. Among the full-sized displays will be
the late Clarence Catillo's "Little Deuce Coupe", a Cadillac-powered hot rod
made famous on the cover of Hot Rod magazine and later immortalized in song
by the Beach Boys. Noted artist Ken Eberts will mark the occasion by
creating a special limited-edition print of this classic machine.
The modern motorsports era will also be well represented in this high-speed
gallery, as a Chevrolet Corvette C5R racecar, fresh from competition in
sports car and endurance races across the globe, will be on display.
A special addition to this year's show will be the GM Racing Gallery, where
artists will be invited to offer their depiction of a significant moment in
General Motors' long and storied history in motorsports and hot rodding. A
distinguished panel will judge the entries, with prizes being awarded to the
top three.
Finally, the GM Racing Fine Art Exhibit will include a silent auction of
various automotive art objects, with the proceeds being donated to the SEMA
Scholarship Fund.
