Saturn Cycling Classic

FOR RELEASE: August 1, 2002

Saturn Classic Offers Public Unique Cycling Experience

BOULDER, Colo. – At the Saturn Cycling Classic, Saturday, August 10, Colorado residents and visitors can meet professional cyclists like three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, experience the excitement of bicycle racing and test their own racing ability by taking the CyberBike Challenge.

The Saturn Cycling Classic begins in Boulder, Colorado and travels 140 miles across the Continental Divide and finishes in Breckenridge, Colorado. On race day, LeMond will lead the peloton riding in the Saturn VUE pace car. At Saturn retailer sponsored activities from August 3 --10, the public can take the CyberBike Challenge.

CyberBike gives the public a chance to race in total safety on a new high-tech system where two cyclists compete over long or short distances against each other on stationary LeMond® pro racing bikes. Children can race on Trek child-size bicycles. Race action is translated into an animated graphic where each racer can see their exact position on a TV monitor.

In Breckenridge, while waiting for the exciting finish of the Saturn Classic, spectators can watch racers compete in separate events, the Nicole Reinhart Memorial Criteriums. Criterium races are at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on August 10.

Team Saturn autograph-signing sessions, and an appearance by 2002 U.S. Olympic Snowboarding bronze medalist Chris Klug will take place at the Saturn display located in the Blue River Plaza in Breckenridge on race day. Other attractions include a racetrack where participants can race remote-controlled VUEs.

As the official vehicles for the Saturn Classic, Saturn VUE and L-Series vehicles will be used by race officials, medical team, communications team and “broom wagon” – the vehicle that picks up those cyclists who cannot continue the race.

The Saturn Cycling Team members competing in the Saturn Classic are Chris Fisher, Will Frischkorn, Harm Jansen, Tim Johnson, Trent Klasna, Damon Kluck and Soren Petersen. Saturn’s women’s squad, competing in the Nicole Reinhart Criterium, will be Suzanne Sonye, Jessica Phillips and Anke Erlank.

Saturn has supported cycling for more than a decade. Over the years, the Saturn Cycling program has grown and evolved. Saturn believes cycling is a good fit with its customers who care about issues related to a productive and healthy lifestyle.
