LA Auto Club: Unlike Stock Market, Gas Prices Remain Steady; Summertime Travelers Benefit from Stable Prices
LOS ANGELES--July 16, 2002--The average price of gasoline in Southern California rose a modest 3 cents per gallon in July, compared with June, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's monthly Fuel Gauge Report. The Southern California average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $ 1.640 up from the June average of $1.610. The current price nearly mirrors the state average of $1.639, which is up from $1.63 in June. San Francisco area motorists now pay an average of $1.80, up from $1.74 a month ago.
The lowest average price in the state can be found in both Marysville and Visalia, where regular self-serve unleaded gas can be pumped for $1.48.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline rose less than 1 cent to $1.396. Georgia has the lowest state average at $1.233 per gallon.
"Crude oil imports have been providing enough supply nationwide to keep prices relatively stable," said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. "Gas production has been reduced in California to lower inventories and increase prices. We're seeing an increase, but not on the level that was expected. Barring any production or import problems, prices should remain stable for the remaining summer season."
